Past example of Volunteerism: Kambel's Soup Kitchen

  • How does volunteering help mental health?  Especially for adolescents.

  • How do soup kitchens run?

  • How can I make a difference?

Soup Kitchens, Los Angeles

'Kambel in the Kitchen' Volunteering.  I'm passionate about food and serving others so a soup kitchen is a good match when I do volunteer work.

For more opportunities check out this great resource called Volunteer Match. You can put in your search there preferred location, age (some soup kitchens are adults only) and what type or volunteering you'd like to do.

When you volunteer there you prepare the meals for distribution that then get deliver to those in need i n LA. So, you don't get to serve the food here which is different to a traditional soup kitchen volunteer position like at the MM. Here you will prep the food (cutting up vegetables etc) and then you'll be involved in packaging them up and labeling with sticker dates so the person getting the food knows what date it was made. Their website easy to use and you can book a date & time. Try to book ahead because they seem to fill up fast (which is great) and look for the specific dates that can kids & adolescents can volunteer. Some of their evening shifts are adult only.

Research Based Evidence - Benefits of Volunteering

... whatever your age! (But for this project, FOR ADOLESCENTS)

“Volunteering is positively associated with mental health in observational studies with community samples but has not been systematically examined as a potential part of treatment interventions with clinical adolescent samples.”

This article reviews some of the best researched volunteer service programs for adolescents and addresses three major questions:

    Volunteering was associated wwith:

    • Higher odds of parent-reported excellent/very good health in both children and adolescents.
    • Higher odds of flourishing in children, as well as adolescents.
    • Lower odds of behavioral problems in children and adolescents.
    • While volunteering was associated with lower odds of anxiety in adolescents, there was no such association for children.
    • Interestingly, there was no association between volunteering and depression for either children or adolescents.
